High Blood Pressure at Applebee's

Most of the foods served at Applebee's restaurants are high in sodium. Unless you are visiting the restaurant or dining here in the group, there are hardly any options from the main meals if you wish to keep your blood pressure in check. Standard Applebee's. Flatware wrapped in dirty napkin and has to ask for clean. 1800 margaritas come in a shaker - asked if it was one drink or two. Waitress said "one" but it was two. Didn't matter tho because of zero alcohol. Steak tasted fine, but I asked to sub mushrooms for "seasonal veggies" (usually broccoli or soggy squash - got the mushrooms but they charged extra without taking anything off for the side I didn't get. They had a small computer console for passing the time with a game, ordering or paying the bill. Used it to play a game and they charged $1 on the bill! No charge mentioned on the console anywhere. Finally, tipped the waitress a standard 20% for dinner service and she asked us if meant to leave that much. Welcome to Iowa :) I would eat here again but wouldn't order a drink.

I took my daughter and grand daughter out for their birthdays here today. I have had bad experiences with the Applebees on Collins Rd, but since this is where my daughter wanted to eat, I encouraged this location, hoping for better service and better food. I only attained half of that dream. I ordered the Napa Chicken and Portobello meal. The menu made it sound so wonderful with red wine sauce and sauteed onions and portobello mushrooms over a grilled chicken breast served with red potatoes for less than 600 calories. When it came the ONIONS WERE RAW. Not even cooked and they covered the top of the dish. Just a couple dots of the parmesan that was promised. It was also covered with dehydrated parsley which was not a good texture. The chicken breast was cooked through and juicy, but the grill mark areas on it tasted like they had not cleaned the grill after cooking other meats. The potatoes were great, perfectly browned, quartered red skin potatoes. The red wine sauce tasted like it was made with one of those cheap, salty "cooking" wines people who don't know how to cook buy at the store. The sauteed vegetables on the side had onions in it too, but they were cooked. The red bell pepper strips were cooked to a mush and the 3 big oddly shaped pieces of zucchini were almost raw. There were only about 5 smallish bite size chunks of portobello that were dry cooked so they were rubbery and wrinkly, not moist at all. I appreciate the calorie cutting, but at least pour some water on them. Sheesh! Then there were some extremely small portobello slices that were cooked to mush. The black berry lemonade was good, but too sweet for my taste. It was nice that there were a few fresh berries in it and that refills were free on it. I sat there a couple minutes debating on whether to get up from the table to find the waitress since I did not see her anywhere. A manager happened by and asked how everything was and I told her I could not eat the food due to the raw onions covering it. She apologized and said she just always orders it without the onions because she does not like them. She was nice about it though. She brought me a small plate and had me scrape and pick all of them off. She took them back to be cooked. They were brought out a few minutes later by the waitress who apologized, but were still barely cooked. I gave up on the onions, but I had already scraped them back onto my plate. They were covered in burger grease and black burned bits of burger or steak or something. It totally ruined the taste of the dish. I scraped them to the side of the plate and ate the rest of my food. As I was about 3/4 of the way through the chicken breast, I found a very long blond hair in my food just as the waitress was coming back to the table. I put it down on the little plate and pushed my plate away saying I was done. I was thoroughly disgusted! The waitress apologized and left quickly with the plates. When she came back with the bill, she had asked the manager to remove the cost of my meal. The service is why this place gets two stars. The food was not worth $11.99 before tax. Also, the kids chicken breast meal had a chicken breast the same size as mine and a huge plate full of french fries for $4.99. Way too much for a two year old child to eat. But, it was fortunate because her daddy had ordered a chicken tender basket that came on a small plate and had only a very small handful of fries and 5 or 6 small tenders. He had asked for an Asian BBQ sauce they had to be served with it and he loved that. My daughter got the BrunchBurger which she loved and it came with sweet potato fries that had a cream cheese dipping sauce. My grand daughter ate more of those because her kids fries were pretty heavily covered with black pepper. Everyone else was satisfied with the taste and doneness of their food at least. We never did receive the milk that was to come with the child meal though. Luckily we had brought in a sippy cup with water in it and I had given her some of the melted ice after I finished my lemonade. I don't think this food was worth what I paid for it. The service was good, the food ranged from satisfactory down to disgusting. I just wish I could have gone in and for once had an Applebees kitchen staff get my order right. This is why I quit going to the other Cedar Rapids location amongst other issues they had. There are cheaper local places with much better food and good service.

Awful...I had the 4 Cheese Mac & Cheese and my mom had the salmon. The Mac & Cheese was sweet! Who makes sweet Mac & Cheese? It was gross. My mom's salmon with artichoke spread was dry, dry, dry! Doubt I'll eat there, again. The service was fine, the food was bad.

If you are not concerned with food quality, taste and cost, then by all means eat here. My family went here because we had a gift card from friends. I have never been before. The hostess tried seating us in a highly crowded part of the restaurant next to the bar. We asked to sit in a more quiet place and she obliged. We had a waiter that seemed nervous for one reason or another. We ordered the French onion soup as the picture showed a heaping amount of cheese over the bowl that was baked golden brown. What came out was cool temp soup with two slices of processed white cheese on it that was not melted and had minced raw onion on top of it. We promptly sent it back without needing a new one. The waiter apologized and all was well. Later a manager came out and said she knew what it was like to have a baby? What did that have to do with anything? She said she would deduct the soups from the check-good idea- and also apologized. That was fine. Rest of the meal was ok and price was ok. Btw those "soups" were 3.99 a piece. Better to open up some .99 Campbell's soup at that point.

Stopped in Saturday about 6. The restaurant was very full, but very quiet.. Everyones mouths were full... We were seated immediately and waiter service was quick. Ordered from the 2 for 20 menu.. I am a serious fan of the Won-ton Chicken Tacos. Our waiter was was friendly and attentive. I noticed the waitress at the other table was also. A grumpy customer at another table was satisfied quickly by the Manager. Meal service was fast. The food was delicious. We were finished and heading for home by 7. We'll be back.. Maybe for the late night apps. and a drink next time.

Not from this area but saw there was an Applebee's so did the Carside takeout option. The person who came out to the car to deliver the food was very friendly. Took our credit card and was back out a minute or two later. The food was good too!

This isn't my first choice of places to dine in Cedar Rapids, but the kids like it. And I was surprised! The food was good and the service was outstanding! Appetizers were slow coming out, and pretty bland... but out server was excellent. He made our entire meal a wonderful time!

This place is eh, not my first choice but not my last. They run the same 2 for $20 deal lone star does and it just doesn't compair. Not a big fan of places that over load their walls with stuff. The food is ok but would be just as happy going to a fast food joint!

I hadn't been to an Applebees in a long time, but was pleasantly surprised. Nothing extraordinary, but not bad either. The cheesesticks were particularly good - good flavor, and melted but not runny. The late night appetizer special (half price after 9) is great, and it's good to have options that stay open past 10 in CR.

This place has some good food. Two stars for the price and it's very "chain-like" feel. I was a loyal customer once, and I always ordered the steak and shrimp parmesan - so so good. Last time I went - which was about 2 years ago - they had jacked the price up $3. The price of everything else went up a little bit, and portions shrank. I believe this is when they introduced the 2 for $20. Sounds like a good deal, but again, smaller portions. Lemonades are delish, always used to get strawberry mango...wish I could find these lemonade flavors at other restaurants.

Applebee's trys to take on a local favor by hanging banners of the local high schools and sports teams. That's were the local flavor ends. The menu is very chainish, the same everywhere, lacking in both flavor and imagination. We gave them a shot last weekend because we had $5.50 coupon for their 550 calorie menu. Apparently it's only good on one meal, not both. That's what we get for not reading the fine print. We still paid a lot for a poor meal. No wonder this chain is trouble. We shoulda had Sushi House :-(
